BSH Students Earn Outstanding IB Results

Thursday, July 08, 2010

The Class of 2010 at the British School of Houston has accomplished something that has never happened in the history of the school and something that rarely happens in any school offering the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Program: 100% of students entered for the IB diploma passed.  One exceptional student, Benjamin Ayton, gained 44 out of a possible 45 points on the diploma, placing him in the top 1% of IB students in the entire world.

“These results are a credit to the young people who achieved them, to their ability, and to the very high academic standards that they set in all areas at all times,” said Amanda Foxwell, Deputy Head of School at the British School of Houston.

The IB Diploma Program is the most academically rigorous post-age-16 educational program currently on offer in the world.  Students study 6 subjects for the full IB Diploma, three at Higher Level and three at Standard Level.  They must study math, at least one science, a humanities-based subject, and at least two languages.  Students also choose one more subject, which could be an arts subject, additional science or humanities, or a third language.  They must also take a Theory of Knowledge course, produce a 4,000-word extended essay/research project, and complete 150 hours of extracurricular activities based around Creativity, Action, and Service.

The IB Diploma is scored out of 45 points: scores of 35 points or above, the average points score achieved by the class of 2010, ensure entry to the most prestigious universities around the world and credits in even Ivy League universities for up to the entire freshman year.  20% of IB Diploma candidates at the British School of Houston gained 40 or more points, placing them in the top 5% of IB students in the world. All of these candidates also studied 4 subjects at Higher Level, a remarkable achievement.

Stephen Foxwell, Head of School, remarked, “IB results like these are also a tribute to the exceptional quality of teaching that they have received from the staff at our school and to the support they have received from their families.”

Students who achieved the IB Diploma this year at the British School of Houston also include Atif Al Harthy,  Benjamin Ayton, Elizabeth Butcher, Sebastian Calvache-Mejia, João Pedro de Sousa, Molly Fleming, James Fox, Hidde Gerretsen, Ross Grant, Hannah Harries, Abigail Helmore, Iker Lambarri, Alex Barbara Lucas, Nicola Massie, Angela Milanés Salemi, Rosario Moran, Erika Sagert, Stefnaie Sanches and Cecilia Turtchetti.

The IB Diploma Class of 2010 all gained entry into their first choice universities, including some of the most prestigious universities in the US, Canada, Europe and the UK. Graduates from the class of 2010 will study at the University of Texas (honors program), Imperial College, London (masters program) and the University of Toronto. All students earned the points necessary on the IB Diploma to gain entry into their first choice university.  Students also gained outstanding SAT and ACT scores, placing them in the highest percentile, and leading to impressive scholarships.
